The opportunity

The Cloud Systems Engineer will be responsible for planning, building, supporting, and maintaining all cloud-based and on-premises Windows and virtualised technologies, along with associated core infrastructure applications. As a key member of the Server & Cloud Platforms team, reporting directly to the Team Leader, Server & Cloud Platforms, the role manages GWW’s IT infrastructure across the majority of systems, ensuring reliability and performance. The position also contributes to developing and implementing security and redundancy strategies to deliver secure and resilient services to internal stakeholders and customers. In addition, the Cloud Systems Engineer will collaborate closely with core business areas, vendors, and IT stakeholders, while providing training, guidance, and technical coaching to junior team members.

 

Responsibilities

  • Monitor, maintain, and optimise server, storage, and Windows computing resources across all GWW sites, including certificate management and secure baseline images.
  • Install, configure, and manage enterprise identity and access management services (e.g. Active Directory, Entra), ensuring secure handling of privileged access.
  • Maintain and support core infrastructure and application systems (e.g. AD, Azure, Exchange, SQL, VMware, Linux), ensuring system availability, performance, and capacity.
  • Plan and implement system upgrades, patches, and security improvements, while leading escalation support and coordinating with third-party vendors to resolve complex issues.
  • Conduct system monitoring, documentation, and disaster recovery activities, proactively improving operational processes and managing user expectations.
  • Serve as the subject matter expert for the health, performance, and optimisation of GWW’s cloud computing environment.
  • Provide technical advice and implement cost and resource optimisation strategies, including monitoring Microsoft licensing and usage.
  • Design, deploy, and support cloud-based applications and infrastructure (e.g. Azure, Entra, Exchange Online, SQL, Linux, Wintel), ensuring system availability and performance.
  • Automate deployments and configurations using Microsoft scripting tools, while maintaining security, access controls, and recovery strategies within Azure and Microsoft 365.
  • Collaborate with internal teams and vendors to deliver fit-for-purpose cloud solutions, enhance operational processes, and maintain accurate system documentation.

 

Skills & Experience

  • Strong technical expertise across Azure, Microsoft 365, Windows Server, VMware, Exchange, SQL, and related infrastructure technologies, including cloud (IaaS, PaaS, SaaS) and on-premises environments.
  • Advanced skills in troubleshooting, incident management, and administration of Active Directory, DNS/DHCP, certificates, Group Policy, and enterprise patching.
  • Proficient in automation and configuration management using PowerShell and Microsoft frameworks.
  • Solid understanding of networking, web application, redundancy, and ITIL principles, with practical experience in system optimisation and resilience.
  • Proven ability to collaborate with external partners and stakeholders to design, implement, and communicate effective, cost-efficient technical solutions.
